Welcome to East Kent History![edit | edit source]

East Kent History is a website managed by the Addelam History Research Group.

The Addelam History Research Group was formed in August 2010 by members of two successful research projects on Upper Deal conducted in 2009 and 2010 by the Dover Branch of the WEA. The purpose of the group is original research and publication of a wide range of material about the local area. Read our constitution.

We are affiliated to [*http://www.balh.co.uk/index.php British Association for Local History] (BAHL). We are now collecting their publications and [[[Publications available to borrow | we have a list]]] that members can borrow.

We gratefully acknowledge support from Deal Town Council for a contribution to our running costs over several years. image dtc91.png We also acknowledge the grant for equipment and training made by the Coalfield Regeneration Trust in Partnership with Dover District Council (April 2012) allowing us to buy computers, software, camera, projector, display stands etc so we can be self sufficient in recording and displaying our work to the public.

Research[edit | edit source]

Our research is based on contemporary primary sources such as tithe maps, census, births marriages and deaths, property titles and sales, the 1910 Inland Revenue Valuation and newspaper archives etc.

Research thus far has been largely focused on parts of Deal, however our members also have interests in several other areas — Ringwould, Eastry and Walmer for example. There are many resource lists through these pages. Most of them are available within the group. Please send a comment if you wish to consult any item.

Publication[edit | edit source]

Recently, online publication has been through the Your Archives website operated by The National Archives where Church Path in Deal is being progressively documented in the Historical Streets Project. Research results have also been shown at exhibitions in Upper Deal, Deal Library and The Landmark Centre in Deal. Occasional articles have appeared in 'Those Were the Days' and 'Then & Now' sections of the //East Kent Mercury// and more are planned. See our [[[press]]] cuttings section for more information.

Increasingly, our research results will appear on this website. Explore the ==Projects== menu for details. Pages will update with corrections and additions, so please keep watching!
